Gut Bacteria in North Jersey Cockroaches Dictate Popularity in Social Order

Commensal bacteria dwelling in the gastrointestinal tracts of cockroaches lace that the pests' stool with compound cues which mediate social behaviour, according to a study.

At least this appears to be true in German cockroaches, according to a study published at North Jersey PNAS, where researchers revealed that volatile chemicals made by bacterial vaginosis brings the pests to aggregate. Schal and his team decided that cockroaches which were increased in sterile states in order that they would take no bacteria in their bowels are brought on by microbe-rich feces.
